A room to write

Letters began as a simple promise: open a page and start writing without needing to make an account, choose a plan, or learn a complicated system first. The earliest version established the essential room—a home for articles, a focused writing page, and a way to move naturally between the two. Along the way, the app found its early identity, moving from Inkwell to Write while the interface became clearer and more deliberate.

This first stretch also made the page more useful than a plain text box. Pieces could have readable names and addresses, and the writing surface learned to hold headings, lists, quotations, images, tables, links, code, and Markdown. The aim was not to put every possible control in front of you, but to make each one available when a piece needed it.

By the end of the phase, the room could look after the work you had already made. Empty starts felt less stark, articles could be removed intentionally, and the whole library could be saved as a backup and brought back later. Those foundations made it possible to focus the next phase on the story of the writing itself, rather than only the page where it was written.
